Summer 2007

Dear Richard,
|
The weather's been great! Cooler than in
past summers and not nearly the amount
of rain our guests in Oklahoma and
Missouri have had.
In this issue we have some specials to
tell you about, and we want to introduce
you to our first grandchild.
We also want to reveal the winner of our
quarterly drawing.
|
|
Meet our
grandson! |
We
were eagerly awaiting our first
grandchild and he finally arrived. Meet
Reece, a happy smiling baby who we love
to spoil.
Jan keeps disappearing to Virginia
saying that Reece 'needs' her.
(According to Jan, she doesn't disappear
often enough.)

Caramel and Mojo said they wanted to
introduce you to their new brother. His
name is Chester.

Blueberry Pickin' Adventure
|
What an adventure we had getting our
supply of blueberries this year.
Every year we buy our yearly supply of
blueberries from Ashley's Blueberry
Farm, a local organic grower.
Unfortunately for Ashley, a late spring
freeze killed her entire crop as well as
most other growers in Arkansas and
southern Missouri.
We found some blueberries available just
south of Kansas City at the Blueberry
Patch farm. As it turned out, the
Blueberry Patch truck was driving up to
Minnesota at night, picking blueberries
and driving straight back so the berries
would be fresh. So we hopped into the
mini-van for what we thought was going
to be a leisurely 4 hour drive to meet
the truck.
Halfway there we found the highway
department had closed Highway 71 and 69
due to high flood waters. No problem
they said, just head back east and
connect to highway 13, should only take
an extra 45 minutes one way. Arghh, we
hadn't planned on the delay. Alas, Jan
our resident navigator, who admits she
is directionally challenged, said she
found a shortcut on the map that would
take us around the flooding. Ok, from
experience you'd think Richard would
question her directions? Did he listen
to her? Well of course. he learned those
marriage saving words of "you're right
dear".
So off we went down this small two lane
road. Twenty minutes later we ended up
in a small city which had sandbagged
itself up and closed their roads and
everyone was in the town square waiting
for the water to come. So, not wanting
to paddle our van back home we headed
back to where the highway department
sent us. As we headed out of the town
the water was already lapping at the
side of the road so we put the pedal to
the medal and beat the flood to high
ground. (I should have listened to what
I tell all of you, never listen to Jan
for directions.) We took the long way
home.
We did end up getting our blueberries
(all 120 pounds of them). That night we
watched the news and saw the town we
drove into. The river had crested higher
than it ever had before, some 57 feet.
Wow, were we lucky. From now on I'm
wearing earplugs so I can't hear the
navigator.
